A smaller than expected group of members turned out for the Fire Station Visit on the 6th. So a revised plan was quickly drawn up, Instead of the Talk, Tour and Demo. A show and tell was held for the six members attending. Cowbridge Fire Station is a small Station based in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan. It is Retained (Part Time) & Full Time Station. which has two appliances. The 1st a brand new Volvo FL Pump/Rescue Ladder & 2nd a Narrow Access Pump Ladder/ Medical Response vehicle based on a Mercades Van. Due to its geographical location within the Vale it is one of the busiest stations. Unfortunately the 2nd of the two appliances was not available however that meant concentration could be given to the new appliance. Built in conjuction with Renault/Scania at Volvo Truck Gothemburg Sweden and equipped by Emergency ONE a specialist emergency vehicle coachbuilder. It uses a 6 cylinder turbo charged 14Ltr engine linked to a fully automatic 6 speed PTO (Power Take Off) Gearbox and weighting in at around 25 tons. It can carry a full crew of Seven if needed however normally operates with Five (Driver, Senior Officer, two fire fighters and a medic/fire fighter). The main role of the appliance is fire fighting carrying around 9,000 Ltrs of water. Its secondary role is that of a recue tender for road collisions where occupants are trapped, carrying a wide range of spreading and cutting equipment it makes things a lot easier. It also has Chemical/Bio hazard capabilities in case of incidents involving such materials. The role of the modern Fire Service has diversified over the years from just being Fire Fighters to now offering Fire prevention advice, Animal/Water Rescue, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Medical Response the list goes on.
